Project statement

Many in the West take it for granted that South Korea is a flourishing, vibrant democracy, which sets the example for democracy in Asia. In actual fact, democracy is still very new to South Korea.

Koreans would have liked to relegate the days of brutal military dictatorship to the history books, having built up a safe, dynamic, and free country after the introduction of democratic elections in the 1990s. However, the events of December 2024 reminded the Korean public of the need to remain vigilant.

Boiling Point is an ongoing project documenting the current period of civil unrest in South Korea following President Yoon Suk-Yeol’s abortive attempt at imposing emergency martial law on December 3, 2024.

“the events of December 2024 reminded the Korean public of the need to remain vigilant.”
